So somehow I managed to get a second wind and make a whole bunch more icons! I suppose that's not a bad thing, and it gave me an opportunity to work on my colouring some more.

Hey, I'm the girl messaging you on tumblr. I've been trying to replicate what you've made here for my own personal banner/icons, but I can't figure it out.

oook, I've had a look through the PSDs and I think I have a general outline for what you can do.

So with a lot of the FFXIII icons you asked about I started off with an image that was really dark and grey and gross, so if what you're starting with isn't so bad then you'll probably need to fiddle around a bit so that what you're making doesn't turn out really pink and really washed out/bright. So for an example, I'll be talking about what I did with this icon:



First off I duplicated the base like three times. I set the first two to Screen 100% bc of the darkness of the cap, and the third to Soft Light 100%. I used a Colour Balance adjustment layer and used the following settings:

Midtones
+51, -3, -36
Shadows:
+5, -3, -12
Highlights:
-10, -6, -13

which makes the image have much warmer colours. Next I slapped on a couple of textures. I don't think I even have these textures saved on my computer any more, but basically if you use one that's sorta pinky purple with the colours blending softly together, and put that one on Soft Light 60%, and a second that's pinky-red at the top and white-ish yellow at the bottom on Multiply 50%, you'd get a similar sort of effect. This is definitely a thing where you wanna play around with the settings though because how well it works probably depends on the image.

I then used a Curves layer where the graph had two points: one at 77,87 and a second at 110,110. This'll increase the contrast/shadows a loooot more. Next I used a Vibrance adjustment layer with Vibrance at +49 and Saturation at +4, then a Brightness/Contrast layer with Brightness at +4 and Contrast at +8.

Optionally you can put a big old white splodge somewhere on the graphic with a soft brush and set the Opacity to 20-40%.

Soooo that's a general overview of how to get that colouring! I hope this was at least somewhat helpful, it's a bit hard to remember what my thought process was since I made these like 2 years ago.
